New Kroger means more lanes for GA Hwy 21

RINCON, GA (WTOC) –Anticipation is growing for a new mega-Kroger, much like the one on Mall Boulevard in Savannah, and an added bonus is more lanes on Highway 21.
The new Kroger is being built next to the Lowe’s in Rincon. Construction crews are laying the groundwork now, which looks like a small mountain of dirt off Highway 21.
“That big mountain you see won’t be there four months from now; it’s a settling process,” Rincon City Manager Wesley Corbitt said.
Developers hope to open the store next May.
It’ll give the county and city a bigger grocery option since a lot of people travel to Pooler for selection. It will also give Rincon and Effingham County their first Starbucks.
Speaking of traveling on Highway 21, the city is planning on adding some lanes in that area of 21 to alleviate traffic.
“You don’t go to Savannah between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. and you don’t return between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. So that extra lane will allow people to remove themselves early from the two lanes of traffic and get onto an exit lane so it’ll keep the traffic flowing,” Corbitt said.
The city is applying for a grant to help pay for the additional lanes on GA 21 in the city. It will also mean a new traffic light, but there’s no word on when that part of the project will begin.
