New interchange configuration change to close State Route 21 in Port Wentworth
The Georgia Department of Transportation anticipates contractors to complete the reconfiguration of the diverging diamond interchange in Chatham County on Sunday, Dec. 18. This DDI will be the first one in the state outside of Metro Atlanta.
Barker Construction plans to close State Route (SR) 21 Friday night in preparation for the Sunday DDI changeover. During this time, SR 21 will be closed to thru-traffic under the Interstate 95 bridge. The Exit 109 ramps will be open to traffic with only right-hand turns on and off of SR 21. Traffic will be detoured beginning Friday night at 9 p.m. and the contractor will be out of the roadway and have SR 21 back open by Sunday at 8 p.m.
Detour routes will be signed as follows:
- Motorists wanting to access SR 21 northbound at the interchange will travel northbound on I-95 to Exit 5 in South Carolina; reenter I-95 traveling southbound to Exit 109; turn right onto SR 21.
- Motorists wanting to access SR 21 southbound at the interchange will travel southbound on I-95 to Exit 106; reenter I-95 traveling northbound to Exit 109; turn right onto SR 21.
Motorists are urged to seek alternate routes, if possible.
